Place to hide

Far away from the "civilization" Azores is a perfect place for the one's who just want to get away from the noise, the city, to find the peace of mind, and want  to enjoy staying real close to the fascinating nature and to their partners they are travelling with. This is one of the reasons why so many honeymooners choose Pico island and start their new phase of life here with us - so did Peter Buck, guitarist of R.E.M., owner of the famous white guitar of Kurt Cobain, legendary actor of recent music history do, who came to our small island fresh married.
And probably he is not the only celebrity who pointed on the map and choosed this place to hide, middle of nowhere.
Beside some highlights like ex-yacht of Steve Jobs, designed by Philippe Starck, cruising along azorean coast some weeks ago, the island has it's own "celebrities", who are not easy to recognize though.

After finishing my life in Budapest and before starting the new one in Azores, spent some days in lovely Lisbon to see again the city and friends. Rui advised to visit the exhibition of Sena da Silva in any case, the portuguese Henri Cartier-Bresson, who is known not only as a photographer capturing the atmosphere of lusitanian daily lifes, but held as the establisher of creating the fundamentals of portuguese design. And what is the link between him and my island Pico?

Sena da Silva's son, António Sena, writer of the one and only book of history of portuguese photography (Uma história de fotografia), lives here, in the village next to ours. Besides his recent hobby - farming and cowing - the big love are the books, every week he comes to Lajes to the post office to pick the new deliveries for his book shelf. And do you know what? On the top of his van there is huge box to store and transport things. What do you think, what is inside?

Nothing has changed?

Exactly a year ago, on the same day, i first arrived to Pico.
And i was immediately fascinated by the nature, the dramatic colors, that green is green, blue is blue, emphasized by the lavatic dark grey, the kindness and hospitality of the people, the exotic fruits, that the banana is small, sweet, and grows in the garden, that the spermwhales and dolphins are not just in the deep water, but appears in small objects at the entrance, or everywhere, that the beer is mini  - 20 cl a bottle - so it stays always cool, that you don't throw the paper into the toilet (!), that in summer are festas named after all the saints (Pedro, António, João) where chamarita will be danced, bifana, favas, and row lapas are eaten.

Holy ghost of Azores

Some days ago in the near of Silveira a van from the bakery came across on the street, the backdoor was open, and some men jumped off, with huge bread in their hands. They stopped our car, and hand in fresh baked sweet bread. I was sitting confused with the two new "traveller" on my knee. "Don't worry, is the tradition of the Holy Spirit" - told João calmly.

One of the most unique tradition of the Azores is the Holy Ghost Festival (Festa do Divino Espirito Santo), which is held in the seventh Sunday after Easter. It shows not only the religious aspects of the Azorean people, but their hospitality as well: sharing itself is one of the most important attributes of the festa. They share wine, meat, bread, in order to thank to the holy spirit - the white dove, the symbol of the holy ghost.

The Festival of the Holy Ghost followed by other festivities during summer give a good opportunity to people to gather together, eat, dance, celebrate, and just feeling fine.

Work in progress - preparation for the "festa" 2013. To see the wonderful photos by Miguel Madeira click here.

More about this tradition you can read here and here.

My island, Pico

What else give the characteristics of an island, if not the borders?
Looking out of the kitchen window i see the small vegetable garden and the cows of the neighbour, above the wild forest, and the view of the bedroom pointing on the neverending ocean, which rules the daily life.

Among the many foreigners who settled down on Pico my favourites are Véro and Arthur, a french couple came in 1998, fall in love with the island, bought a house, and since then they have been giving accommodation of the many sailer friends from all around the world - to David for instance, who owns a factory in Vietnam, and spends most of his time on his boat on the ocean.
Véro is a fantastic cook, who loves to treat her guests well, not only in their house, but in the Florestal Parque of São João, where she prepares Crepe for the visitors on sunday afternoons. Arthur is renovating the house, telling stories from the sea, and singing songs of Jean François de Nantes.

- 1 adag zsemlemorzsa
- 1 adag reszelt sajt
- 2 tojás
- 1 kávés kanál sütőpor

- olívaolaj, fűszerel, só, bors

Ezeket összekevered, jénai tálba teszed, és zutty, be a sütőbe.

Here we go

Out of the nine Azorean archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic ocean
(38°28′19″N 28°51′50″W) Pico, my new home is the second largest in territory - 447 km2 - and in population the fourth with it's 14 thousand inhabitants. Pico got the name after the vulcano, Portugal's highest peak (2351 m). Some would think it must be really boring to live here, on an island. But it's really not.

A kilenc szigetből álló Azori-szigetcsoport területben második - 447 km2 -, lakosságszámban negyedik  - 14 ezer fő - legnagyobbika a Portugália legmagasabb pontjáról - 2351 m - elnevezett sziget. Ez Pico, a választott otthonom. Az Atlanti-óceán közepén élni egy szigeten - 38°28′19″N 28°51′50″W - tömény unalom? Nem nem, szó se róla, ez tévedés. De tényleg.
